Our Mission
Grandparents for Public Schools stand together for public education in Texas.
A thriving public school system is essential to the future of Texas
Our 2026 priorities
Grandparents for Public Schools is a nonpartisan statewide advocacy organization comprised of hundreds of concerned voters who believe Texans must demand a commitment to our public schools. Regardless of political party, we expect nothing less from our state leadership.
Supporting public education is an investment in Texas — our future depends on it. Here are our three priorities.
1. Fund our public schools first.
Public schools are the essential foundation of a thriving Texas. Yet funding for public education continues to fall short of what our students and educators need. Adequate funding ensures that all children, regardless of their ZIP code, have access to quality education and safe learning environments.
2. Reject deceptive voucher/ESA scheme.
In 2025, the Texas Legislature passed a $1 billion voucher scheme—misleadingly called “Education Savings Accounts” (ESAs)—that diverts critical public funds to private institutions with no real accountability.
These schemes shift the burden onto taxpayers, benefit a select few, and undermine public schools that serve the vast majority of Texas students. It’s time for a watchdog on this bad policy.
3. Stop the unlimited expansion of charter schools.
Charter schools can open unlimited new campuses statewide, with more than 120 having been approved in 2024 alone. One appointed official approves with no notice, vote, or public meeting, excluding taxpayers from the process. Yet all Texans pay, even those in areas without charters. Public schools lose billions in revenue, while many new charters show poor performance, low enrollment, and close with no notice to parents. Charter schools get approved by the State Board of Education and then expanded by the governor’s education commissioner—often without any real evidence that they’re needed.
