UPCOMING EVENT

Warriors for public schools:

the reverend and the Republican

We’ve got a powerful double bill for the next virtual event in our Grandparents for Public Schools interview series.

“Save Our Public Schools: Stop the Private and Religious Takeover of Texas Public Education.”

The speakers:

n  Rev. Charles Foster Johnson, twice named “Baptist of the Year” by the Baptist Center for Ethics, believes it's his Christian duty to support public schools and keep them free of religious influence. Johnson leads Pastors for Public Children, an independent ministry founded on the belief that public education is a patriotic principle — “a human right, a constitutional guarantee, and a central part of God’s plan for human flourishing.” Described by the Washington Post as “a powerful voice in support of traditional public education in Texas” and by the Ohio Capital Journal as “a principled leader in championing public schools and opposing vouchers for religious schools,” Johnson tells us that "public schools are a conservative American value."

n  Glenn Rogers, a state representative of impeccable conservative credentials, supported every facet of Greg Abbott’s agenda except one: school vouchers. The West Texas Republican did not believe vouchers were the best thing for his mostly rural constituents. That landed him among the Texas GOP legislators targeted with a smear campaign by Abbott and his megabucks backers. He lost his primary to the lavishly funded opponent who was Abbott’s man. As Texas Monthly put it, “Rogers ran afoul of Governor Greg Abbott and billionaire oilmen Tim Dunn and Farris Wilks. It cost him his job.” As Rogers himself put it, quoting Davy Crockett: “I’ll wear no man’s collar.”

These two Texans are passionate about fighting for Texas’ children and against the forces of Christian nationalism and privatization that threaten our public schools. Plan to hear their stories at 7 p.m. CDT Oct. 17 by registering for the event here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/registertZcvduGvqTorHtMeDwkpfIqovCEdABaeFLo6
